Dry shade

A beaut plant for dry shade

Now here's a great plant for those dry shaded areas. It's an evergreen shrub that slowly reaches 2 metres. The foliage is glossy and variegated, so much so that its common name is Gold Dust Plant. It can be used for a hedge or screen and is tolerant of dry conditions. The important thing is to get it well established  by mulching, feeding and regular watering when young. Once it has established it can be left and treated just the same as your other plants in the garden. It is also a great container plant. Flowers and fruit very rare in Sydney. This plant will tolerate frost. Considered an "old fashioned" plant, it deserves a come back just because of its water-miser tendencies! Its botanic name is Aucuba japonica 'Variegata'.
